I'VE ALWAYS BEEN HERE...." -- DELBERT GRADY OF THE OVERLOOK HOTEL THE SHINING First published in 1977, The Shining quickly became a benchmark in the literary career of Stephen King. This tale of a troubled man hired to care for a remote mountain resort over the winter, his loyal wife, and their uniquely gifted son slowly but steadily unfolds as secrets from the Overlook Hotel's past are revealed, and the hotel itself attempts to laim the very souls of the Torrence family. Adapted into a cinematic masterpiece of horror by legendaryStanley Kubrick -- featuring an unforgettable performance by a demonic Jack Nicholson -- The Shining stands as a cultural icon of modern horror, a searing study of a family torn apart, and a nightmarish glimpse into the dark recesses of human weakness and dementia.

I remember watching the movie first-- holy was I scared; the first time I never wanted to start watching a horror movie. another movie version I like better over Jack Nicollson one. read the book and couldn't put it down. sk is my favourite writer and couldn't have made the book any better
Not super scary but still a very good book.
Not as scary as I expected but still good, I liked it.
This is one of my favourite books, loved it! everyone should read it!
Well written but predictable. A lot of the events and imagery are kind of cliche, but it could be that it wasn't cliche when this book was originally written and it became cliche afterwards because everyone seems to copy Stephen King. I wish that the one female character had been better developed. The pacing is perfect.
Great book!! This was the first SK book I read, after hearing about him for years in high school.SPOOKY!! Highly recommend it!!
Difficult to comment on a now classic. The suspense was terrific, I enjoyed the notion of telepathy and psychological interference, but I have a hard time accepting objects coming to life. Had the hotel been haunted with a ghost controlling events, I would have accepted the character and plot development better. I, however, enjoyed the sounds of the party and the mirages which really added to the atmosphere and story. Suspended belief to be sure, but a great summer read!
Creepy!
One of Stephen King's most thrilling books.
