Detective Rob Ryan and his partner, Cassie Maddox, investigate the murder of a 12-year-old girl near a Dublin suburb. The case resonates with similarities to a murder committed twenty years before that involved two children and the young Ryan.

Summary
Add a Summaryloved it, a dark mystery with characters i enjoyed reading about. A detective who was the sole surviver of a abuduction of two of his other friends, investigates a murder that took place in the same location 25 years later. Haunting and lonely- you won't like the ending.

Add a CommentThis book is incredible. She is one of my very favorite authors. Gripping from beginning to end. Beautifully written, and a very good read. Definately a page turner.
I wish commenters would not give away the plot. I'm half way through "The Woods" and I'd like to figure it out on my own. So far, I'm a fan.
A bad seed who distroys lives, all around just because shes not getting enough attention! yuck hated this book, a complete downer.
I really enjoyed broken harbour so I wanted to read another book by this author and therefore chose The Woods. I was very disappointed with the ending which has put me off reading any more of her books.
Someone lent me a copy of Tana French's second book, The Likeness, which I read before knowing In the Woods had preceded it. I was eager to circle back to the first book and, although its pace seemed slower, I was just as entranced with French's story line and personality insights as I was with The Likeness. Her character interactions made me feel like I was in the same room with Cassie, Rob and Sam, and her descriptions of places and events are unexpectedly rich and sensual. Lots of reviewers have recounted this book's story line, but it's hard to describe In the Woods' layers. You have to read French's work to experience it. I'm a fan.
What an interesting story. I had a really hard time putting this one down. I liked all of the main characters and although I had my suspicions I was still surprised at the end and am really looking forward to reading the other books.
I enjoyed this book, although it was not as fast paced as I usually like. If you are looking for a quick "who dun it" where you have a tough time putting it down - this is not the book for you. If you like flawed protagonists and delving into the psyche of characters, then this is the book for you.
Really enjoyed this book but the ending made my blood boil. Not sure if i can forgive the author for her stylistic choice....
Into the Woods is the first of Tana French's four mysteries set in Ireland. A very riveting read and well developed characters--but a frustrating end in my opinion. I still want to know what happened so long ago when the two children disappeared . . .
A compelling read, with a unsatisfying ending. Am looking to her subsequent books to be kinder to the protagonist.
